Esmeralda became a dedicated teacher after her mother, Rosa, was killed in a 2006 Chicago drive-by shooting by a teen school dropout. She was only 45. Esmeralda was also present at the time of the shooting and could have been killed herself. This tragedy galvanized Esme's deep commitment to expanding educational access. Rosa, herself, was only able to complete a third grade education. This work resonates globally, as today, two-thirds of girls around the world lack an education.
Rosa, a woman of extraordinary selflessness, strength, and devotion, passed away after a life rich with love and family.
For twenty years, Rosa dedicated herself to line work at a local Chicago plastics factory. Despite the demanding nature of her employment, she never wavered in her commitment to her family and friends. Rosa was renowned for her generous heart and mindful approach to sharing, always ensuring that others were comfortable and cared for before herself.
She was a beloved mother and a cherished friend, whose warmth and kind spirit touched everyone she met. Her greatest source of pride and accomplishment was witnessing her daughter, Esmeralda, enroll in college, an opportunity Rosa’s sacrifices helped secure. Rosa’s enduring impact is further honored through Esmeralda’s literary career, as several of Esmeralda’s published novels feature characters inspired by her resilient and loving mother. Her memory will forever be a beacon of unconditional love and tireless effort.
After Rosa's passing, Esmeralda took a semester off college and worked at a frozen food factory. This was the same factory her father had worked at for 30 years before retiring. With a lot of support from her family and college community, Esmeralda returned to college to complete her bachelor's. To manage her responsibilities, Esmeralda would work in the mornings and attend evening classes while also helping raise her 11-year-old brother. A typical day would look like: waking up and getting ready for work while getting her younger brother ready for school, dropping him off at school and heading to work, picking him up, cooking, finishing up any last-minute homework for herself, making sure her brother completed his homework, then getting to class, returning home late, starting on homework, and finally getting some sleep.
Needless to say, after many trials and tribulations and A LOT of help, Esmeralda is now a Doctor of Education, and her brother is a Computer Engineer. ¡Sí se puede!
